January 21, 2010, Van Buren, Ark. – Summit Medical Center’s Emergency Room Chief of Service competed in the Walt Disney World Marathon earlier this month in an effort to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Doctor Joni Carmack completed the 26-mile marathon and another half marathon but is still racing to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Dr. Carmack’s goal was to raise $5,000 for the non-profit organization. “I started running for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society after one of our hospital employee’s husband was diagnosed with the cancer in 2006,” said Dr. Carmack. Cindy Shettleworth, an Environment Services employee at Summit Medical Center, said Dr. Carmack’s efforts were an inspiration for her husband. “When he didn’t want to go to chemotherapy I would remind him that Doctor Carmack crossed the finish line for him and he needed to do the same,” said Shettleworth. Today, Shettleworth’s husband is in remission. Along with Dr. Carmack, Mary Jo Brinkman, Assistant Administrator at Summit Medical Center ran in the race to support the cause. The mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
